Saints Pub + Patio at 4041 Urbandale Ave. in Des Moines is the second one in the metro area. The Beaverdale bar and restaurant opened Wednesday in the former Michael’s location, which has been given a complete makeover. The interior includes a center bar with a perimeter of tables and stools, including a cement-top table that will seat 14. A four-season room seats 48 and has two garage-door sized windows that will be open in warm weather to a patio that will seat another 38 people.
Wes Dorsch, manager of Saints in Beaverdale, sits behind a concrete-topped table with inlaid monogram “S.”
Manager West Dorsch said the bar has 18 TV sets that will be tuned to a variety of sporting events, including games of the Tampa Bay Rays. Dorsch said that is so customers can watch Hoover High graduate Jeremy Hellickson, who is now a pitcher for the Rays.
The menu includes soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches, wraps and entrees for weekday lunches and for dinner. Breakfast is offered on Saturdays and Sundays.
Dorsch said in the first week of opening, tenderloins and burgers have been popular, as has one particular appetizer, a Bleu cheese on potato chips with bacon and chives.
Breakfast options include the usual, as well as not-so-usual options such as the Saints Bowl. Sunrise Burger and Pets de Nonne. The Saints Bowl includes roasted potatoes topped with two sausage links, two bacon strips, scrambled eggs and melted cheese. Pets de Nonne, a very rude name translated as “nun’s farts” that is given to a type of beignet, is a fried pastry puff dusted with powdered sugar or topped with vanilla-orange icing.
Breakfast will average about $10, including coffee, or less for a bowl of cereal with milk.
